ARTIST'S BIO
Elizabeth Garat was born in Riverside, California. She grew up in California and Colorado, moving to Europe with her family to complete high school. Her formative years were spent on her French-Basque/American grandfathers sheep ranch in rural southern California. Weekends were spent at her grandmothers home in Laguna Beach. In Laguna Elizabeth was introduced to the land and seascape paintings of California Impressionists past and present. This exposure to the world of painting fostered by her grandmother, made an indelible impression on her. She says these encounters with art and her life out of doors honed her ability to feel, observe and distill.
Ms. Garat earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of California at Santa Barbara. An important mentor at UCSB was photographer
MacDuff Everton whom Elizabeth credits for helping develop her eye.
Ms. Garat received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Currently residing in Memphis, Tennessee, Elizabeth is a member of the Memphis arts community exhibiting her work regularly.
